Sparky Lyle helps Operation Shoebox New Jersey celebrate 8th anniversary at The Wine Room Reception & Auction
Somerset Patriots Manager Emeritus Sparky Lyle will be among the special guests that will attend the annual Wine Tasting and Fund Raising Auction Saturday, Feb. 23 hosted by Operation Shoebox New Jersey at The Wine Room in Bound Brook.
Lyle won five pennants during his 15 years as manager of the Patriots and was honored by the Atlantic League three times as Manager of the Year. In his position as manager emeritus, Lyle will be at all 2013 home games at TD Bank Ballpark to meet and greet special guests on the field, interact with fans, and be a team ambassador at the ballpark and throughout the community.
Joining Lyle, a member of the New York Yankees in 1977 when he won the Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in baseball, will be renowned sports artist James Fiorentino and Joe Bodnar, the reigning bid calling champion of the New Jersey State Society of Auctioneers.
Guests of Honor will include active and retired members of the military, several of whom have served overseas and families of those currently deployed.
Fiorentino has donated several prints and original works of art that will be auctioned by Bodnar to help OPSHBX NJ raise funds to ship personal care packages overseas to US military personnel deployed in Afghanistan and other countries around the world. Also to be auctioned by Bodnar is a variety of gift baskets; lithographs; antiques & collectibles; a “Somerset Patriots Experience” gift certificate that includes a luxury suite for 30 guests; a signed, limited-edition Fiorentino giclee of Lyle in Yankee pinstripes; sports cards; autographed books and gift certificates from area restaurants and merchants.
Lyle will personalize and autograph a copy of his New York Times bestseller “The Bronx Zoo” to the highest bidder. The Yankee legend’s book recounts the team’s 1978 season from Spring Training through the World Series, won by the Yankees.
The $100 per couple donation includes hors’d’oeuvres, dinner and drinks; each guest will receive a limited edition bottle of “Bravo & Nobile 2011,” a Reserve Bordeaux handcrafted, bottled, corked and labeled by Operation Shoebox New Jersey volunteers at the Wine Room.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for guests to preview the auction items and submit bids prior to the live auction which begins after dinner.
Operation Shoebox New Jersey, founded in February, 2005, has shipped more than 61,000 personal care packages overseas. It is a registered 501C3 non-profit corporation.
The Wine Room is located at 2 John Street, Bound Brook. Free parking is available at the Wine Room and across the street in the Bound Brook Municipal Parking lot.
